PMAYG fund: Hmar church leaders dismayed over irregularities in Pherzawl District

Beneficiaries charged as much as Rs 30,000 to get Rs 1.3 lakh

The apex body of Hmar churches in Pherzawl District, Hmar Kohran Inzawmkhawm (HKI), has expressed dismay over allegations of corrupt practices in the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana in Hmar inhabited areas of Pherzawl Sub-Division and Parbung Sub-Division respectively.

The HKI issued a statement on October 7 in which it appealed to the government officials and middlemen involved in corrupt practices not to cut money from the PMAYG so that beneficiaries can fully utilize the money for which it is intended.

“There should be no questionable conduct on the implementation of the PMAYG fund which is a blessing for the poor to build their houses. It’s a blessing from God through the government. The HKI is shocked, dismayed and we condemned the purported threatening and attempt to seize part of the fund by unscrupulous people,” the HKI was quoted as saying by Hmasawnna Thar newspaper.

The HKI also appealed to the officials to fix the issue and bring to book the culprits involved in misappropriation of the fund.

There are instances of reports that beneficiaries who are getting the PMAYG funds are told to pay some amounts ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 by “some superior officials”. The total amount of money sanctioned for each beneficiary is said to be Rs 1.3 lakh.

“The government must not sit idle and take cognizance of the matter,” the church leaders said.

So far there is no official reaction from the Sub-Divisional Officers of Parbung, Pherzawl and the DC respectively over the allegations of funds being “charged” by some people from the villagers.
